I ended up in Southwest Asia during 2011 and 2012 and to say it is an interesting place is an understatement. To begin with the entire area is basically a few centuries behind the west in any area you choose to select. Despite that the landscape is actually quite beautiful and at the same time juxtaposed with extreme danger. I took as many photographs as I was able as I traveled and if you have the courage, I recommend traveling there. It’s not for the faint of heart or those who are unarmed, depending on where you go.
The people can be friendly depending on the circumstance but the culture is dramatically different than what you are probably accustomed to in the west. It is very agrarian and every day is basically a struggle for survival in most of the areas I traveled through. Food, water, shelter, warmth, safety… everything the west takes for granted were not readily available and the locals were in a constant struggle just to acquire the most basic necessities. Makes you appreciate being in the west where you can stop at a party store, watch a movie or hang out in the back yard without worrying if someone would stop by take everything you had.
Imagine living in a place like that, beautiful and dangerous at the same time. The daily life is so brutal they probably don’t have the time to appreciate the mountains, streams and wildlife for anything other than a source of providing the basic necessities for life.
It was an interesting and illuminating experience.
