Macedonia or Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) was only an hour or so from where I lived and I visited the place many times. I’m not clear on the whole debate over the name but everyone I spoke to called it Macedonia.  For some reason, I think the Greeks referred to it as FYROM but as I’m not from the area I just referred to it using whatever term the locals wished.  In any event, the prices were reasonable, and Skopje, which is the capital city was so close I  stopped by as often as I could.   During my trips down there I had the opportunity to visit many places in and around Skopje, which I indicated is the capital city.

On more than one occasion I rented a condo or apartment so I didn’t have to return the same day.  This enabled me to devote all my time and energy to visit the city and speak with the locals.  I also passed by the Zoo and thought, what the heck, I’ll stop in. I spent several hours there and will cover it in more detail on the Zoo page. The old town is a must see if you’re in Skopje as it’s absolutely filled with activity.  Do you like to shop, eat, drink, see history or just hang out?  Then, this is a great place to start. I was lucky enough to stumble upon a sign for the circus and you guessed it, I went.  It was inexpensive, within walking distance and probably the only time I’ll ever see a circus in the Balkans.   In case you missed the links here they are:

Skopje – A great place to spend time in Macedonia

The Zoo – Hey why not visit a zoo in a foreign country?

Circus – Yep, I even found a circus that was in town.

The Old Town – Shopping, eating, drinking and history in one place.

The Bazaar – like to shop?  This is the place for you.

New Year’s Eve – Yep, I was there

The places I rented in Skopje – a sample of where I stayed

In case I forgot to mention it the word Roma was not in my vocabulary in any meaningful way until I visited Macedonia.  I had no idea there was a “Roma Issue” until this time.  I heard it discussed on the television and by locals as I traveled but Macedonia appeared to be a sort of Roma Mecca.  Check out the Skopje page for more.
